The deaths of two teenage girls hit by a car in Hampshire are being treated as murder, police have confirmed.

The girls, aged 14 and 16, were walking along Ann's Hill Road in Gosport when they were hit by a Honda Civic at about 04:15 GMT, police said.

The younger girl was pronounced dead at the scene and the 16-year-old died at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth.

A 20-year-old man from the town has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.

Police appealed for anyone who saw the car or the crash, near the junction with Brougham Street, to get in touch.

Det Supt Dick Pearson said: "This is an extremely tragic incident which has resulted in the death of two young girls.

"I currently have a team of detectives and other officers, including expert road collision investigators, working on this case to fully investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths of these two teenage girls.

"I would appeal to anyone who knows anything which could help this investigation to contact my team as soon as possible."

Ann's Hill Road remains closed at its junctions with Middle Cross Lane and the A32. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
